Freedom within ADHD

Often, ADHD shows itself as an irritation, minimally, and as a heavy load at worst. And still, we are allowed to enjoy it and enjoy our lives, ADHD or not! We deserve freedom and joy and love too. Notice that I didn’t write “Freedom from ADHD” or “Freedom despite ADHD,” because if we’re feeling trapped or held hostage by our ADHD, then we need to learn those skills that will help us find freedom within ADHD. Sure, change can be frightening, but it can also be freeing. And, (softening the fear…) whether newness or change moves us from conventional to unconventional or the other way around, what matters is if we’re moving toward a better option for us.

Your Bill of Rights:

Put the words “every day” at the end of each example!

  1. You are allowed to feel great about yourself

  2. You are allowed to feel excited about your future

  3. You are allowed to grieve your past

  4. You are allowed to do work that fulfills you

  5. You are allowed to not like certain things about your life and still move forward

  6. You are allowed to be loved deeply, expansively, and joyfully, by as many people as possible!

  7. You are allowed to love others without limits

  8. You are allowed to set boundaries that help you maintain your health, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and financially

  9. You are allowed to put yourself first (the oxygen paradigm helps me remember this). Self-care is wealth!

  10. You are allowed to correct someone’s rude or misguided comments about ADHD, Neurodivergence, or any other part of your being that is important to you. You’re also allowed to ask for acceptance, patience, and appreciation.

If you don’t receive any of these rights, pay attention - this does not diminish you worth; it tells you about the other person.
